Clutter in your Purse

Purses: Women NEED them. Especially since a lot of clothing companies decide to design women’s pants with no pockets… Sigh.
They come in all sizes, and obviously the larger the purse the more it can hold, which often leads to a cluttered mess that you may not even know what resides in there.
I love Lug bags. They have so many pockets, come in really nice colours, and the straps are adjustable to fit all different sizes. Other nice additions for most of their bags include:
  • A cell phone pocket that is lined with a soft fabric that will not scratch your phone screen
  • RFID protected pockets (or sometimes the entire purse!)
  • Slots for pens/pencils in the main pocket so you’re not searching at the bottom of your bag
  • Water-resistant fabrics
  • Water bottle holder on the side
Anyway, enough gushing. Whatever type of bag you choose to have, having it be convenient to get things out of it quickly is much more important than how beautiful it is (and hopefully you can have the best of both worlds!).
What are the necessary things you have in your purse:
  • Cell phone
  • Sunglasses
  • Wallet
  • Make up
  • Deodorant
  • Hand cream
  • Gum/mints
  • Nail clippers/file
  • Lip balm
  • Band-aids
  • Hair ties
  • Pen/pencil
  • Keys
  • Feminine hygiene products
And the not-so-necessary items:
  • Old receipts
  • Old ticket stubs
  • Coins rattling at the bottom of purse – keep them contained in your wallet so you can actually use them
  • Pocket calendar/address book/calculator – we live in an era where this info can all be stored on your phone
  • Expired coupons
  • Business cards
  • Chequebook – how often do you really write cheques?
  • Misc. Trash
A purse should not be a dumping ground for EVERYTHING! Do you drive a car? Maybe consider what you don’t use as much and see if it would be worthwhile to keep it in the car instead. Do you never use something, but just have it in there ‘in case’? Consider just not keeping it with you always. (Maybe even throw it out!)
Your purse is an item of convenience. Men who only use the pockets of their pants do not understand how luxurious it is to hold so many things at your side (but will often try to use some of your space to keep their own things). So it should not be something that drags you down with the weight of what you’re storing in there.
The only things I keep in my purse: phone, sunglasses, pen, lip balm, mints, keys, reusable shopping bags, headphones, bus tickets, deodorant, business cards (for my own business), small bottle of hand lotion and a lunapad (check them out, they are so wonderful!).
Dump your purse out on a table. Right now.  Sort the necessary items from the useless. Toss the ripped scraps of paper, long-ago receipts, expired coupons, old ticket stubs and promotional materials that were handed to you at some event months ago. Old mints that are collecting dust and fluff at the bottom of your bag, toss them too.  Candy wrappers, they don’t belong there! You should cherish your purse as a great friend that holds your most necessary and precious items during the day. It is not a trash can or a storage box. Think about it before you decide to keep it in your purse: Does the convenience of having this item on me all day long cancel out how much it will weigh down my purse?
